Facebook and Instagram ads can appear in either regular feed format (square), carousel feed format (multiple square images), or story format (vertical rectangle).

The ideal dimensions for feed/square format ads is: 1080 x 1080 px

The ideal dimensions for story/vertical format ads is: 1080 x 1920 px

When creating your ads, make sure that they are true to the dimensions specified above so that your ads don’t get cut-off when they go live. All video files uploaded should be in .mp4 format. We have found that <15 second videos perform best, but you can upload up to 60 second videos.

When you create an ad in Preflect, you have four options:

  1. Upload both Feed and Story files

  2. Upload Feed only for both placements

  3. Upload Story only for both placements

  4. Upload 3 or more files for carousel feed placement

Let's go in-depth:

1. UPLOAD BOTH FEED AND STORY FILES

(Recommended Option)

You can upload two images or videos: one tailored to Feed placements (1080x180), and one tailored to Story placements (1080x1920). This approach is best because the ads will almost always look perfect. To do this, start by clicking the + button on the square box to first upload your square format ad. Then click on the + button on the vertical box for the story placement. To avoid confusion during the process, ensure that the files have the same filename, but add "(story)" to the Story placement file.

2. UPLOAD FEED ONLY

When you upload only a Feed format ad, it will appear in both Feed and Story placements. When it appears in a Story placement, Facebook and Instagram might add a colored background above and below the square image. In the space below it, Facebook will add the first few words of your ad's Primary Text.

3. UPLOAD STORY ONLY

When you upload only a Story format ad, it will appear in Story placements, as well as some Feed placements. When it appears in a Feed placement, Facebook or Instagram will automatically crop it to fit a square. Due to limitations in Facebook Ads, it is not possible to disable Feed placements for Story-format creatives.

3. UPLOAD CAROUSEL FEED FILES

When creating your carousel ads, you will select one file (either square feed OR vertical story; you cannot combine both) for each individual card. There should be no less than three cards per carousel ad.

A word of caution: Facebook and our delivery AI have been disfavoring carousels lately, frequently not giving them any delivery. Based on what we’re seeing in the ad markets, you’ll likely get the best delivery and performance by sticking to single-image or single-video ads.
